Eric Ahn is an 11th-grade student with a passion for learning, teaching, and building meaningful connections through mentorship. He is a member of the National Honor Society and an active volunteer in his community.
Eric’s journey as a tutor began organically. Having loved chess from a young age, he initially started by teaching middle school students how to play. Over time, those sessions expanded as students began asking for help with math, English, and even violin, which Eric has played since 6th grade. What began as casual support has grown into a consistent tutoring practice, where Eric now works with nine students.
As these relationships developed, Eric noticed a meaningful pattern: many of the students he worked with came from families navigating complex challenges, including autism, dyslexia, or having siblings with special needs. Through this experience, he also became aware of a quieter gap—while families were understandably focused on urgent care and support, siblings and other children in the household sometimes received less individualized attention and support.
Motivated by this realization, Eric began shaping his work beyond traditional tutoring. In many cases, he takes on the role of an older mentor—someone students can talk to, share their thoughts with, and simply spend time with. For children who may experience communication challenges within their families due to complex caregiving dynamics, these interactions can become an important outlet for connection, confidence, and emotional support.
His sessions are flexible and student-centered, often extending beyond academics to include building with LEGO, exploring science experiments, playing music, or simply creating a comfortable space where students feel seen and heard. Eric has demonstrated a natural ability to connect with neurodiverse students, including those with mild autism, by meeting them where they are and adapting to their individual needs.
In addition to tutoring, Eric volunteers at a local senior center, further strengthening his commitment to community engagement.
Looking ahead, Eric hopes to expand this initiative into an accessible and sustainable platform that supports families navigating complex needs. He envisions continuing this work through mentorship and service-oriented efforts even as he transitions into college, creating spaces where students can receive not only academic guidance, but also genuine connection and support.
